Marshland St James driver Jenson Sayell followed in the footsteps of F1 driver Lando Norris at the weekend as he recorded two wins at the SuperOne Championship, at Rowrah, in Cumbria.Sayell drove his InterMAX 950 to victory in the fourth round of the series – an event Norris tasted success at early in his career.Practice in the wet at the start of Saturday’s third round went well with Sayell second fastest, so a ninth place in qualifying was disappointing. In Heat 1, the youngster made up five places rapidly but was unable to make progress beyond fourth. In Heat 2, Sayell still lacked pace but worked his way up to seventh before passing championship leader Moulton on the last lap for sixth. In the final, the West Norfolk race ace started sixth but was caught up in an incident on lap one dropping to last place. He clawed his way up nine places to finish eighth but subsequently received a five-place penalty for a dropped nose picked up in the collision and dropped to 13th. The youngster had pace in Sunday’s qualifying session and was fifth when the session was red-flagged and ended after just three laps.Sayell finished fourth in the opening heat and took his good form into the next race where he recorded the fastest times on laps two and three. Making progress through the pack, Sayell rapidly closed the gap on the leader and took the lead on lap eight. He continued pushing hard to pull out a two-second lead by the flag, clocking a fifth-fastest time on the last lap. Qualifying second on the grid for the trophy final, the youngster took the lead on the first lap, setting five consecutive fastest laps to pull out a 2.4-second lead. With a further fastest time on the penultimate lap, Sayell took a convincing win -his first Final in the Super One championship this season. Dad and chief mechanic Rob was thrilled, saying: “It’s nice to finish the weekend at Rowrah on a high with two wins. Jenson drove so well.”We need to work on a better wet set-up, we are just a few tenths off but we need to find it.” Sayell will be competing in rounds five and six of the Super One Championship at Clay Pigeon Circuit in Dorset later this month.Sayell thanked his team TWR and GW Driver Development for their encouragement and support keeping him focused over the weekend and Force Motorsport /James Taylor Racing for a great engine and InfinityX for engine products. He also thanks his sponsors JLK Vehicle Solutions, Ark East Anglia Ltd, Hall Clean and Professional Aesthetic Enhancements King’s Lynn, Prestige Designs and Chris Phillips – Superstox 99 for their messages of support and congratulations.
