King’s Lynn Town manager Adam Lakeland has opened up about the state of his squad when he took over the team in late September – and assured fans next season will be much better.Despite losing 1-0 at home to Peterborough Sports on Saturday, the Linnets secured their National League North status for another season, and Lakeland predicts there will be no relegation fight next term.He said: “We’re safe but I’m annoyed we lost, especially when we went down to ten men when it shouldn’t have been a red card.“But the main objective when we came in was to keep the club up as we were in a right mess and we’ve managed to do that.“Only the people in and around it know how bad it was. But now there are only two teams in this league who have lost fewer games than us in 2024. “We now need to finish the season at Spennymoor on Saturday with a good performance. We’re in a lose/lose situation being full-time. If we win people say we should win and if we don’t we’re a joke.“I’m really proud of the players and I hope people get behind them next season. We have drawn with and beaten some of the top teams this year. We need to get better and recruit a bit but I have a plan. I know who we need and in what positions and we will try to get as many of those as we can. “Recruitment is the hardest part of the job. Last summer was miles off but if we get it right and add to the group we have, we will be okay. It’s important to get it right rather than loan people in during the season as we’ve had to this year.“When I came to this club it was a shambles. I was told Josh Coulson couldn’t play two games in a week because he wasn’t in good enough condition. He was neglected. “He wasn’t on his own. Many other players were not where they needed to be mentally and physically. My teams in the past have always had a great pre-season and we will have one – I expect us to be flying next year.“If I’m given time to do what I do, with my track record, over time we will be fine.”
