The Football Association has announced more than 500,000 fans have attended Women’s Super League matches this season, the first time that milestone has been passed.
The campaign that has followed England’s Euros triumph last summer included a WSL record 47,367 watching Arsenal defeat Tottenham 4-0 at the Emirates Stadium in September.
A number of other WSL games have taken place at Premier League grounds since, with last week’s ‘Women’s Football Weekend’ featuring Manchester United beating West Ham 4-0 in front of 27,919 at Old Trafford and Everton’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool being watched by 22,161 supporters at Goodison Park.
Meanwhile, the Women’s Championship has had more than 100,000 fans attending fixtures. Sheffield United broke the league attendance record in November with a crowd of 11,137 for their 2-0 loss to London City Lionesses at Bramall Lane.
Kelly Simmons, the FA’s director for the women’s professional game, said: “The interest in our leagues this season has been really encouraging and to have seen over half a million fans pass through the turnstiles is fantastic.
“This growth yet again shows the impact of the Lionesses’ triumph last summer and the positivity surrounding the leagues and its clubs.
“Thank you to the fans, the clubs, and our partners for all the support they have committed to help make this such a memorable season.”
