West Norfolk has a new World Champion in its ranks after Kieran Bowman claimed the biggest victory of his career at the weekend.
Bowman, from Terrington St Clement, was crowned two-litre banger king after driving his way to glory in front of more than 4,000 race fans at Lynn’s Adrian Flux Arena.
Following his big-race success, Bowman was joined on track by stepfather Ant Bailey with the two sharing an emotional embrace.
“Even a few days after the meeting I still can’t believe it,” admitted Bowman on his incredible feat.
“When I drew second on the grid I thought it was over before it started I was expecting to be piled in but I kept my cool and it all worked out!”
“I have led big races before and had issues with cars so this year I went over everything with a fine toothcomb. I actually got a puncture just before I came out and we had to change a wheel which didn’t help with nerves.”
The Predators ace was drawn on the outside of the front row of the 50-strong car entry.
The tension visibly mounted over two slow rolling laps before the green flag fell.
Todd Archer sprung from his pole position start with Bowman slotting in behind.
There was chaos and action all over the track and this claimed the leader on the fourth lap. Bowman took evasive action and, in doing so, was passed by Somerset star Aaron Dark.
But he refused to panic and set about catching Dark before eventually hitting the front.
London’s Karl Douglas started to eat into Bowman’s lead, but entering the final lap the West Norfolk driver still held a four-car advantage.
Douglas was stopped in his tracks coming out of turn two by a classic head-on from Bowman’s team mate Drew Burdett and Bowman was able to cruise to the chequered flag.
“I can’t believe the amount of drivers who have congratulated I’ve had an incredible amount of messages and I will never forget the sound of the crowd on the night,” he added.
“I just have to thank everyone who has supported my – my family, mechanics and sponsors – without them it just wouldn’t be possible.
“Even when I have doubted myself they have all believed in me and the hours and money people put in so I can do this is unbelievable really and I really cant thank everyone enough. I hope me winning this gives them something back because this is for all of them.”
Racing returns to Lynn tomorrow (5pm) when the Pre-80 Bangers and 1300 stock cars are in action.
