Banger fans were treated to something different at Lynn at the weekend with the annual Pre 80 meeting for national bangers and the Jack Garrod MOT & Vehicle Repairs (Swaffham) Pre 95 junior bangers. The Pre-80 Bangers were split into three classes – unders, middle and overs. The first two classes had two heats before a combined final with the overs having their own two heats and final.Several West Norfolk drivers lined-up in the unders class and Darren Fendley showed plenty of pace in his MG Magnet ZB coming home second to the returning Mark Whittaker in the opening heat.He went one better by winning the next heat which saw Lynn drivers occupy the top three spots with him being followed across the line by Alex Ward in his Hillman Minx and Paul Bowen coming in third place in his Toyota Carina.Kieran Bowman and Ashlun Woods were in the middle class where Bowman had a smart Ford Cortina which went as well as it looked as he took a third-place finish in the opening heat with Woods doing the same in the second heat. The combined final saw Jamie Steele as our best local finisher in the unders with a fourth-place finish. Coventry’s Martin French took the chequered flag with Alex Ward impressing with a big shot, which earned him an entertainer award. Andy Frost was the only West Norfolk driver in the over class. He was unfortunate to suffer major damage in the opening nudge and spin race.Still, he did an exceptional job to pull his veteran Volvo in the pits and despite the odds emerged to contest the Destruction Derby where he put in a great performance to earn himself an entertainer award. The junior bangers saw some amazing cars with some of the highlights from local drivers seeing Jack Garrod Jnr racing a super smart Austin 10.Aiden Garrod also impressed with a “Herbie” inspired 1972 Beetle with Morgan Bailey in a Datsun 110A Estate, Daisy Reynolds with an A30 and William Cartwright with an extraordinary Ford 100e.Stock car and banger racing returns to Lynn on Saturday (5pm) when the BriSCA F2 stock cars are back in action with racing also coming from the 2L stock cars, 2L bangers and 1600cc bangers who are contesting the East Anglian teams.
