Last Sunday, the Special Olympics GB, Eastern Regional Athletics competition took place at Bury St Edmunds Stadium in Suffolk. There were teams from Yorkshire and London, Worcestershire, Bradford, Keighley and Skipton, St Albans, Norfolk, Suffolk, North London, and Essex.Cameron Ross and Lily Edwards of West Norfolk Athletics Club were selected to be part of the Norfolk team.Ross turned out some top-level performances. He won the gold medal in his division for long jump with a distance of 4.29m, and for the 200m in a time of 29.2sec and he finished fourth in a combined, very competitive division for the 100m race in a time of 13.9sec.Edwards also came away with medals, winning three bronze medals across the events in her division. In the long jump, she achieved a leap of 1.96m, in the shot recorded a fantastic new personal best throw with a 3kg weight of 4.89m and in the 100m, she was leading for the most part, but an injury in the long jump earlier meant she struggled to hold that lead and was just pipped at the line. The Special Olympics is a global sports movement of people creating a new world of inclusion and community, where every single person is accepted and welcomed, regardless of ability or disability. They are helping to make the world a better, healthier, and more joyful place – one athlete, one volunteer, and one family member at a time.It is a well-supported event, and some fantastic performances were achieved. Well done Cameron and Lily.
