Watlington do themselves proud at reigning champions Heacham

The Under-14 girls’ division fixture list proved to be unkind to Watlington, as their first-ever league fixture saw them travelling to last year’s league winners Heacham, with only a single friendly as their previous experience.

The champions were soon up and running with four first-half goals from their captain, Mercedes Ottoway.

Two more for Ottoway after the break and four from Summer Mann, gave the scoreline a one-sided look.

It didn’t tell the full story though with Watlington coming extremely close to grabbing their first league goal, with only a goal-line clearance from Heacham’s player-of-the-match Bella Ward preventing them from doing so.

Plenty of signs of encouragement for the newcomers, so early in their footballing journey.

Elsewhere in the Under 14’s Terrington Tigers hosted Weeting Saxon in a keenly-contested affair.

It was Weeting who eventually came out on top 3-1 with goals from Miley Mathers and two for Aaliyah Clark cancelling out a Summer Ringer strike for Terrington.

At Under-12s level, a goal glut from Gaywood saw them run out 12-0 winners at home to KLSC Lionesses.

The goals were shared between Eleanor Demonty (3), Ruby Smith (2), Taylor Scotney (2), Rosie Eastwood (3), Ellie Wright and Eve Ellington.

Terrington were the other winners on the day, taking a 4-0 win from their game with Necton.

Two for Mia Choppen as well as one apiece for Ava Human and Poppy Allan were enough to take the points, but credit was also due to Necton who battled throughout.

Finally, Sunday saw teams from Shouldham, Terrington and Heacham meet in the Under-10 age group, where it was great to see the girls get their first taste of match action.

New teams remain welcome, with the Mid Norfolk Youth League offering free entry for all girls’ sides this season
