Tommy Wagg struck a superb six-goal haul as King’s Lynn Soccer Club lifted some early season silverware following an emphatic cup final display. The Anglian Combination side were the winners of the Spalding Guardian Cup after a convincing 9-1 victory over Swineshead Institute Reserves in the final of the competitive pre-season competition.Wagg led the scoring spree by netting six of Lynn’s seven goals in the opening 49 minutes of the final at Holbeach United’s Carter’s Park ground.Jack Walker, Jay Russell and Charlie Brindle were also on target for Lynn before their Boston and District League opponents netted a late consolation. It had taken Wagg just four minutes to break the deadlock when he latched onto a through ball before slotting home the opening goal.Luke Barnett went close to getting Swineshead back on level terms shortly after before Institute had a decent penalty shout turned down when Luke Atkinson went down in the area following a challenge from Tommy Harwood.Swineshead goalkeeper Ky Murgatroyd then produced two superb saves to deny both Wagg and skipper Callum McDermid before Wagg hit the crossbar with a header. Lynn then found their shooting boots with five goals in 13 first half minutes to effectively end the contest with Wagg leading their charge. He raced onto Harry Carter’s pass to double Lynn’s lead with an emphatic finish before the duo combined again to complete Wagg’s hat-trick with a back post header.Wagg rifled home his and Lynn’s fourth goal 10 minutes before the break with Walker’s shot from outside the area eluding Murgatroyd’s grasp to make it 5-0.The first half scoring was fittingly completed by Wagg as he drove home a rebound after his initial shot had been blocked. The in-form marksman picked up where he left off four minutes into the second half by taking Walker’s through goal into his stride before rounding Murgatroyd to tap home and seal his double hat-trick.Despite his substitution shortly after, Lynn still managed to add two further goals to their tally Russell’s cross-come-shot drifted into the far corner of the Swineshead net. Charlie Brindle completed Lynn’s scoring after being teed up by Alfie Brindle whose initial effort had been saved by Murgatroyd.Swineshead then netted their goal with 14 minutes remaining as Michael Reeson burst clear of the Lynn rearguard before slotting home his finish.
