Toll nets on his Downham debut

Fletcher Toll came off the bench to score on his debut as Downham Town produced their best home display of the season against Lakenheath at the SCL Memorial Field.

Toll – signed from league rivals Heacham late last week – completed the scoring after goals from Eoin McQuaid, Matty Castellan and Jake Miller had put the home side in complete control against the visitors.

It saw Downham complete a league double over Lakenheath and leaves them sitting just outside the play-off places in the Premier Division table with a third of the season now completed.

Joint Downham boss Craig Dickson said: “Today was potentially the best performance of the season so far.

“After a couple of weeks of being mediocre at times we were a constant threat throughout the game and wrapped it up with a 4-0 win.

“We’ve struggled against Lakenheath in recent years so to come away with two wins against them is a bit of relief.

“It’s a club we’ve got great respect for and it’s always been a competitive fixture so it’s nice to come out on the right side of the result this season.”

The arrival of striker Toll from Heacham raised a few eyebrows and Dickson believes the club can help his development as a player.

“Fletcher is a player that everyone knows about and we’re delighted to get the signing across the line,” admitted Dickson

“He’s scored 40+ goals in the last two season and got off the mark within a few minutes of making his debut today.

“We’re a team that create a lot of chances but maybe don’t capitalise on enough of these and I think Fletcher adds to the firepower we already have at the club.

“Fletcher’s ceiling in football is extremely high and he’s not a player I expect to stay at Downham for the next five or six seasons.

“Our plan is to support him and develop him and hopefully help the young lad take the right step in his career.

“We have his best interest at heart along with the young lads like Magic Smalls and James Moore, I think that was one of the main selling points in bringing young talent to Downham Town this season.”
