Downham Town were punished by late goals in either half as they were condemned to a 2-1 defeat at the Memorial Field.

Dylan Edge fired Downham in front during a dominant first-half display in the Isthmian League North encounter on Wednesday night.

But an equaliser on the stroke of half-time saw Redbridge level through Solomon Ogunwomoju before Malachi Napa snatched the three points for the visitors in injury time.

It was the second successive game that a stoppage-time winner has sunk Downham.

A Redbridge win had looked unlikely during a first half that the home side controlled for the opening 35 minutes.

Charlie Royle was a real thorn in the Redbridge side and it was his run and cross that allowed Edge to fire Town in front after only two minutes.

It marked wave after wave of Downham attacks with Dylan Kirk seeing his shot parried by the visiting goalkeeper and Eoin McQuaid firing the rebound wide.

More chances came and went as Kirk and Edge combined to set up Royle, who fired wide.

Redbridge began to find their feet in the final ten minutes of the half.

Soumen Nandi just failed to get a touch on a Joseph Johnson cross that flashed across the face of the goal, but two minutes later, after Downham’s Luke Reed had limped off with an injury, Ogunwomoju bundled home an equaliser.

The goal seemed to suck all of the confidence out of Downham going into the second half.

Nandi found himself one-on-one with McAnally seconds after the restart, but contrived to place his effort wide of the target.

Malachi Napa had the ball in the net, only for it to be ruled out for offside, and Karl Kayembe was inches from putting his side in front.

Downham’s only real chance of the second period came when Edge saw his header from a Nick Castellan free-kick turned behind for a corner midway through the half.

Redbridge were fortunate still to have a full quota of players on the pitch after Kayembe shoulder-barged Downham’s Will Moxon to the ground on the left touchline after the ball had gone out of play, but he was only shown a yellow card for his troubles.

The rain began to fall heavily and Downham’s hopes of getting something from the game were washed away in stoppage time as Napa converted a cross from the right to seal an unlikely victory.

On Saturday, Downham will be hoping to bounce back when they travel to Brightlingsea Regent.
