King’s Lynn remain hopeful that Benjamin Basso can help ease their injury crisis by returning to the side in early August. The Dane suffered a heavy fall in last Thursday’s defeat at Sheffield, leaving an already depleted Stars side facing an almost impossible task against one of the strongest teams in the Premiership.Basso suffered concussion, which automatically ruled him out of racing for nine days, but shoulder and arm issues were of greater concern – especially when x-rays in Poland revealed a break, contrary to the information he had received in the UK.Posting to social media, he wrote: “It’s fascinating that you can go to a hospital in the UK and have X-rays and they tell you that nothing bad happened to my arm.“Then I went to Polish (hospital), where I found out that I broke my arm.”The injury clearly rules Basso out of the Stars’ immediate upcoming schedule, which includes a home match with Sheffield on Monday, and a trip to Ipswich next Thursday.Further home matches follow quickly in early August against Leicester (5th) and Belle Vue (8th) in what is a crowded schedule next month as Stars catch up on previous postponements. But they do hope to have Basso back for at least some of that period, which would alleviate a tough situation which currently sees them having to fill three gaps in their team. Captain Nicolai Klindt remains sidelined with neck damage after a crash in Poland last month, and there has so far been no movement on a potential new signing at No.1 to replace Tobiasz Musielak.Lynn’s prospects on a meeting-by-meeting basis are therefore heavily reliant on the Premiership schedule elsewhere, as that has a direct bearing on who they can call into guest.Last night against Ipswich (Thursday), options were severely limited by the fact two other meetings were taking place whilst the one team not in action, Birmingham, had no riders available or eligible to step in for the Stars. The situation is somewhat easier on Monday against Sheffield, as with Leicester not having a fixture Stars can call upon their regular guest Richard Lawson, whilst his Lions team-mate Luke Becker has also accepted a booking. That leaves them filling the remaining gap with rider replacement for Basso – the facility which enables other team members to share the races of the absent rider. And whilst the situation has been immensely trying for club bosses Rob Lyon and Dale Allitt, there’s no doubt that they are putting forward the strongest team they can on every occasion – and still one which remarkably has an outside chance of reaching the play-offs.Lynn have a quick chance to return to winning ways at home when they host defending champions Sheffield at the Adrian Flux Arena tomorrow night (7.30pm). The PSH Environmental Stars lost out to ROWE Motor Oil Premiership leaders Ipswich on Thursday on a night where selection of guests was extremely challenging. That task is a little more straightforward on Monday given that there is only one other meeting taking place, hence the Stars have been able to recruit Leicester duo Richard Lawson and Luke Becker.Lawson, a regular guest for Lynn this season, comes in at No.5 to replace the injured Nicolai Klindt, whilst American star Becker takes the ‘no facility’ position at No.1.His average has dropped after a tough first half of the campaign, but his recent scores for the Lions have been far more reflective of his overall ability, and Stars will hope he can continue that form, whilst rider replacement remains in operation for Benjamin Basso.
