Fresh from a successful weekend at Fulbeck InterMAX karter Jenson Sayell returned to the Lincolnshire circuit to contest the Final round of the Cadet Kart Championship. After a good Friday and Saturday, it ultimately proved a trying event for the Marshland St James driver with engine issues preventing a challenge at the front on Sunday. However, the youngster held on to take second place in the Championship itself.Qualifying went well, finished second just one-hundredth of a second from pole sitter Plowman. In Saturday’s Heat One, Sayell was passed on the start by championship leader Gilman dropping to third. As Gilman took the lead from Plowman on lap four, the youngster followed through for second.Despite three fastest laps, Sayell was unable to get past Gilman finishing second. In Heat Two, Sayell was held wide on the start dropping to third. He stayed in contention with second place and took the place back on lap nine of 10 finishing second behind championship rival Plowman; qualifying second for the Super Heats on Sunday.Sayell was held wide again on the start in Super Heat 1 when third on lap One.It was soon apparent the kart’s pace was noticeably down with Sayell having to settle for third. Sayell’s problems continued in Super Heat 2 when having got away well he was hit in the first corner and dropped to third again. Lacking power, he was unable to keep up finishing a frustrating three seconds behind in third with Plowman holding off Gilman for the win.He qualified third for the Final grid with a runner-up championship place at stake. With doubts about his race engine, the team opted for his practice engine for the race.Sayell started well but was passed on lap two, dropping to fourth, and despite six personal best laps was unable to improve. However whilst not on the podium it was enough for Sayell to claim second place in the Cadet Kart Championship in his first year in both the championship and InterMAX class.Sayell’s dad Rob said: “After Friday’s and Saturday’s pace it was a shame to find on Sunday we had issues with our race engine.”However to finish second in the championship in his first season is fantastic.”Sayell was supported on Sunday by his sponsor Emma Wright of Professional Aesthetic Enhancements, King’s Lynn. He thanks Emma and his other local sponsors JLK Vehicle Solutions, Ark East Anglia Ltd, and Hall Clean as well as his team TWRacing, engine builder Force Motorsport and InfinityX for technical advice. The focus is now on the Super One Championship with the next two of four remaining rounds at Whilton Mill Northants in early August.
