Premier Division wins for Downham and Heacham

Downham Town moved to the top of the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division table this afternoon while Heacham ended their Harleston Town hoodoo this afternoon.Downham came from behind to win 2-1 at basement boys Long Melford while Heacham were 3-1 winners at home to Harleston at Station Road.Dale Stokes’ Downham side leapfrogged Thetford Town – who could only manage a goalless draw at Sheringham – at the top after coming from an early goal down in Suffolk.Will Thorp’s eight-minute goal saw the hosts take a 1-0 lead at the interval before Downham fought back to take all three points.An Eoin McQuaid free-kick was punched into his own net by the home goalkeeper before substitute Dylan Kirk climbed off the bench to hammer home the winner.Downham Town find themselves two points clear at the summit and also have a game in hand on the Brecklanders in second spot.There was a welcome win for Heacham who finally got the Harleston Town monkey off their backs at Station Road. Having already beaten Heacham in three previous meetings this season, including the FA Cup and FA Vase, the visitors will have fancied their chances of making it a fourth. But Heacham had other ideas as they took the lead through Toby Hilliard in the first half.The woodwork twice denied the Magpies from extending their lead before Harleston levelled matters against the run of play going into the break.Harleston had Ollie Ebbage sent off 10 minutes from time and Heacham took full advantage with two goals in the final eight minutes. Karl Anderson netted Heacham’s second from a free-kick and Hilliard wrapped up all three points with his second goal of the game six minutes later.Fifth-placed Fakenham Town’s scheduled fixture at Mulbarton Wanderers was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. In the First Division North, Swaffham Town were without a game.On Wednesday night, Downham Town host Brantham Athletic in a big game at the Memorial Field before entertaining Lakenheath on Saturday.
