Pelicans suffered a defeat on their longest journey of their league campaign to Old Southendians.A 7am start last Saturday morning for Pelicans saw them travel to Southend to take Old Southendians – a team that they beat 2-1 in the reverse fixture earlier in the season. This one, however, did not go to play and can be filed away as a bit of a write-off as they returned home to Norfolk with no points and a poor performance to go with it.They had chances across the 70 minutes through Jack Major, Toby Phillips and Sam Phillips but they didn’t find the net.Kirwin Christoffels and Ian Simons were their usual dynamic selves in midfield but they couldn’t quite find the right combination to unlock the stubborn Southendians back line. The hosts on the other hand took two of their chances and just seemed half a yard quicker to everything and therefore fully deserved their victory.Special mention to man-of-the-match Jason Esser who was once again solid at centre-back and continues to impress in his first season at Pelicans since moving from local rivals Wisbech. Work to do on the training pitch this week for Pelicans before they host Bedford at home on Saturday at 3pm. They will be hoping for a repeat performance from earlier in the season when they won 3-2 in a thriller after scoring with the final touch of the game.Pelicans MoM, sponsored by 4Way: Jason Esser.
