Pelicans Ladies were left to rue a number of missed chances after their 4-3 defeat to City of Peterborough 3rds at Alive Lynnsport on Saturday.

The home side spurned a number of good opportunities in both halves as the visitors took the honours in an East Women’s Division 2 North West seven-goal thriller.

Ladies captain Jane Proctor, who is leading the team for a second season, said: “It was one of those days. We should have won, but just weren’t able to take our chances.

“We only last two games last season and one of those was 5-3 against Peterborough. It was a very similar game to that one.

“We’re still finding ourselves as a team, but there were a lot of positives to take out of the game.

“Our passing was excellent and we worked really hard as a team, we just need to be a bit tighter at the back.”

The goals flowed in an end-to-end first half that ended 3-3.

City of Peterborough took the lead but Proctor was on hand with a deflection to equalise.

The visitors regained the lead but the home side showed their fighting spirit to level for a second time from a well-practiced short corner routine.

Kiona Sequeira fed the ball out to Proctor, who then passed to Tracy Bower for an excellent strike across goal, beating the goalkeeper into the bottom corner.

Proctor and Antliff hit the post in quick succession before Antliff converted the third attempt to put Pelicans ahead for the first time in the game.

Peterborough equalised themselves going into the interval and took the lead in the second half.

There were plenty of chances for Pelicans in the second half, but a tight Peterborough side allowed the home strikers no room to add to their tally.

Pelicans Ladies are made of stern stuff and, after a training session in the week, will look to bounce back in their next outing at St Ives on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Pelicans Ladies 2nds lost 6-1 against Kettering while the 3rds recorded a 3-1 derby success over Wisbech 4ths.
