Grimston Cricket Club got their season underway on Sunday in glorious weather for their first-ever Grimston Derby.Grimston’s first team took on the Grimston CC Lions (Development) Team.More than 250 fans were packed into the Clean Tech Cricket Ground to enjoy bouncy castles, ice cream van, and barbecue laid on by the club to celebrate their first ever “Lions” match. The Lions were captained by Sam Adkin, who won the toss and duly elected to bowl, with the aim of giving his whole squad the chance to bowl in a competitive match.Lions began with a roaring start, with Mark Pickering uprooting the middle stump of James Allitt with the first ball of the game, and two more wickets quickly fell with the 1st team looking precarious at 13-3.New signing Colin Matthews stepped up to the crease and steadied the ship alongside captain Harry Ward.Ward went on to score 63 before being bowled by Ollie Hoyland, 13. Dave Persey was the standout performer with the bat and he went to score a game-changing 113 runs before falling into Brittany Hay’s carefully laid trap – caught by Mark Pickering. The first team finished on 272 all-out.Lions took to the field to bat with opening pair Sam Adkin and Carrie Nichols, who saw off the worst of the opening bowlers before being dismissed by Harry Ward and Tom Wallace respectively.Liam Woodcock went on to score 49 runs, with Ben Taylor-Bunting, 14, scoring six, but the bowling attack from Grimston first team was too hot to handle, and the Lions were all-out for 98. Captain Sam Adkin was pragmatic after the game, focusing on the bigger picture.Adkin said: “We are a development team. Today we had seven players in their first-ever game, nine players who got a bowl, and everyone got to bat. “Four wickets were taken by junior players and another three were taken by our ladies’ bowlers, who were superb.”We don’t expect to win many games this year, but we are building a squad for the future and everyone can be really proud of the hard work they put in today and the experience gained.”
