Lynn’s first ever woman Bishop has taken up her new post today.

The Venerable Dr Jane Steen was formally installed during a consecration service to be held at Norwich Cathedral – the first of its kind to be held there in at least a century – this morning.

Dr Steen, who was previously the Archdeacon of Southwark Cathedral, succeeds the Rt Rev Jonathan Meyrick, who retired in January after nearly a decade in the role.

The historic appointment was first announced in April, when Dr Steen met community leaders and school children in Lynn.

At the time, she described her appointment as “overwhelming” and “humbling”, as she admitted she had a lot to learn about the area.

The service, which was livestreamed via Norwich Cathedral’s YouTube channel, included a sermon from Dr Rosemarie Mallett, the Archdeacon of Croydon.

She said it was “an honour” to preach at the service for a colleague with whom she had spent much of the last year “firefighting” as the church adjusted to life in Covid times.

She added: “Over the last year, most people have had to face their deepest fears

“The world, our nation and our church have been shaken to their core.”
