Magpies hit for five by Mildenhall

Heacham suffered their heaviest defeat of the Thurlow Nunn League season on Saturday as high-flying Mildenhall returned home with a 5-0 victory.

The unbeaten Premier Division visitors took a 3-0 lead into the break before adding two more goals to their tally in the second half.

Magpies boss David Griggs, who lost goalkeeper Aaron Watson on Friday night and Luke Gray to injury in the warm-up, had no complaints about the final result.

“I couldn’t have asked for more effort from the lads all of them gave their all but we just have to hold our hands up and say the best team won,” said Griggs.

“Mildenhall are very strong with no weak links and I’d say they are the best team we have played in league and cup this season.

“We started with a bare 14, which included three players making their debuts.”

There was no such problem for Downham Town who returned to winning ways in the league with a 2-1 home victory against Kirkley and Pakefield.

Jake Miller and Pat Yates were on target for the hosts at the SCL Memorial Field.

After the game, Downham Tweeted: “Not the best game to watch today. One that neither side really deserved to win, but we take all three points nonetheless.

“Very few chances for us, with Duncan McAnally making some important stops at the other end, including a penalty save at 2-0.”

The win leaves Downham on the fringes of the play-off places.

Elsewhere in the Premier Division, goals from Joe Keeley and Jay Myhill saw Fakenham Town defeat Long Melford at the Daly Group Stadium.

In the First Division North, Swaffham Town ended Parson Drove’s unbeaten October run with a 3-1 victory at the Uncle Luke’s Stadium.

Matthew Hayden, Gino Livoti and Chez Rust all scored for The Pedlars, who recovered well after conceding in the 12th minute.

The home side took full advantage of the home side receiving a red card in the first half following a reckless challenge on Rust.

Swaffham’s second successive win leaves them sitting 15th in the table.
