Fletcher Toll has set his sights on a third consecutive Golden Boot and helping Corby Town achieve promotion from the Midlands section of the Northern Premier League. The Lynn-born striker has enjoyed a phenomenal first season at Steel Park by scoring 22 goals in all competitions as the second-placed Steelmen maintain their push for a place in the promotion play-offs.After plundering more than 70 goals for both Heacham and Downham Town at Steps 5 and 6, the qualified scaffolder has taken his game to new heights under the guidance of former Linnets boss Gary Setchell.Toll is rapidly closing in on 100 goals in just three seasons of senior football and, while his progress with the Northamptonshire side is brilliant, it is perhaps bittersweet for the Linnets who have twice let the youngster slip through their grasp.”It would be nice to get the Golden Boot again, but I feel like it’s just my job to score goals and lead the line,” said Toll.”If I get it, I get it, but if I don’t, then it doesn’t matter as it’s all about helping the team.”It has been another step up, and the biggest difference has been the physicality. “The defenders are a lot more hands-on and don’t like you to run the channels. They like to leave a mark on you.” The 20-year-old has already paid Setchell’s faith for giving him an opportunity at Step 4 and says the former Lynn, Wisbech and Bedford boss is the best manager he has worked under.”He’s the best manager I’ve worked under,” said Toll.”His man-management is probably his best attribute. He knows how to deal with people so well and is top-level. “If something seems up, he will always ring me or text me to make sure I’m alright and see how I am.”His tactics as well, he’s always got something up his sleeve if we need to get back into a game.” Toll’s exploits this season include hat-tricks against Coventry Sphinx and Long Eaton United, with the 7-0 drubbing of the latter particularly pleasing for the youngster with the Blues pushing for one of the play-off spots. His progress further up the pyramid has been helped by the likes of ex-Linnets defender Rory McAuley, who regularly dishes out advice to help him improve. “As a leader, he is on you,” revealed Toll.”I travel with Rory as we have a carpool. We talk a lot in the car on the way to football, and he’s been a big help to me as he has played higher.”He’ll tell me little things that he doesn’t like strikers doing and stuff like that, and little things like that I’ve added to my game.”We’ve got quite a few older heads in the changing room who have played in the Football League so they’ve been a big help and experience is key in football. “When you’ve got players like that around you who know the game and who can read a game, it’s always helpful.”Several higher-league clubs have come calling for the young forward this season – but, for now, Toll only has one focus.”Promotion is the aim, first of all, hopefully the Golden Boot after that, and then we’ll see what happens in the summer,” he said.”My aim as a kid was always to be a full-time footballer, and I know if I ever was to go pro or have a full-time contract and it doesn’t work out then I know I’ve got something to fall back on.”Full-time is the aim, but we get there when we get there.”
