King’s Lynn Town claimed their biggest scalp of the National League North season as they came from behind to topple league leaders Scunthorpe United at The Walks.
Two goals in the space of as many minutes from Josh Coulson and George Morrison set Lynn on their way after former Linnet Andrew Boyce had headed the visitors in front before Morrison’s second goal of the night sealed the points in injury time.
It was Lynn’s first success against a side outside the relegation zone as manager Adam Lakeland masterminded another win over the Iron having guided Curzon Ashton to three point against them earlier in the campaign.
Boss Lakeland stuck with the same starting line-up and substitutes bench for the third successive game.
Scunthorpe United lined up with four former Linnets in their team with Michael Clunan, Ross Barrows and Tyler Denton clocking up more than 500 appearances between them during their time in Norfolk.
The visitors carved out an early opening as Connor Smith cut in from the left and saw his shot deflected wide of the post for a corner.
Defender Josh Coulson created Lynn’s first opportunity after 11 minutes as his cross picked out Ben Stephens who blazed over the woodwork from three yards out.
Despite making a bright start Lynn fell behind in the 16th minute as Boyce was allowed the freedom of the penalty area to head home a Jacob Butterfield corner from the right.
Scunthorpe, who were pleasing on the eye, enjoyed long spells of possession after taking the lead.
But it was Lynn who got themselves back on level terms eight minutes before the interval as Coulson eventually poked home a Ben Stephens corner after an almighty goalmouth scramble.
The game was turned on its shortly after as Lynn took the lead.
Full-back Billy Jones was the creator down the left and, after two home players went for the same ball, Stephens played it into the path of Morrison to drill home his first goal in Lynn colours from 25 yards.
The visitors came out with the bit between their teeth after the restart, but for all of their pretty football they created little in the way of clear-cut chances.
It took the Iron 25 minutes of the second half to force Lynn goalkeeper Paul Jones into a serious save.
For Lynn, it was all about remaining disciplined and their game management as they were forced to defend their lead for long periods.
Danny Elliott blazed over for Scunthorpe United from a few yards out while Lynn cleared another effort off the line in the latter stages.
It was nail-biting stuff in the final few minutes but Lynn’s grit and determination helped them to their biggest win of the season.
But Lynn made sure of the three points deep into stoppage time as Cameron Hargreaves saw his shot brilliantly saved by Ross Fitzsimons before Morrison gobbled up the rebound.
