King’s Lynn Town have parted company with playmaker Josh Barrett who has joined former manager Tommy Widdrington at Aldershot.A statement released by the club a short while ago read: “Josh Barrett has joined Aldershot Town on a free transfer.“The club wishes to thank Josh for his efforts in the shirt and we wish him well for the future.”The former Reading academy player, who arrived at the Walks in October 2021, scored 19 times in 100 appearances in a Linnets shirt.Barrett has found himself frozen out of the equation since returning from a broken metatarsal, which he suffered in a freak training ground injury in October.Only last month, Linnets boss Adam Lakeland questioned the desire of the midfielder following the 1-0 home defeat to Darlington.Lakeland said: “We’re in a relegation scrap and I need people that are going to work hard for the team when they’re on the pitch.”I’ve been honest with Josh and he knows because we’ve had the conversation but I thought his last performance here against Banbury was unacceptable.”There’s things that kind of led to why that was the case. He had things going on that he hadn’t brought to our attention and that affected his performance on that day.“When you’re in a relegation fight and you’re the manager you need at least 11 players on the pitch that are going to fight tooth-and-nail for 95 minutes and put a shift in.”Of course, he is an option but he’s got to be mentally, physically ready and prepared. If he does that, then we know that technically there’s no issues because he’s got amazing ability.”Barrett is believed to have been left unsettled by interest from Widdrington at the Shots, who wanted to take him to Hampshire earlier in the season, but still wanted Lynn to pay some of the player’s wages. His shining moment in a Lynn shirt perhaps came when he struck a stunning injury-time winner from all of 35 yards against Peterborough Sports at the start of the 2022/23 campaign.
