Norfolk speedway favourite Robert Lambert spoke of his excitement after coming out on top in an epic British Final decider at Belle Vue on Monday.Lambert, who came through the ranks to reach world-class level during his years with King’s Lynn, now focuses on continental and Grand Prix racing, and became World No.2 last year. But he was back in the UK this week to clinch his second British title, ending a three-year run of victories from his GP rival Dan Bewley in a race which many are placing up amongst the best in the history of the sport.Lambert, Bewley, Charles Wright and current Lynn racer Chris Harris put on a mesmerising show of track craft with a total of 17 changes of position over the four laps, six changes of lead, and all four riders were in front at one stage or other during the final lap and a quarter. It was a magical minute of racing and Lambert’s win was finally sealed with a stunning blast around the outside on the last bend to pip Wright to the line.He said: “That was a long minute and definitely a tough one. There was a lot of line-changing on the track, which made it very interesting.“Me and Dan were fast, so was Charles and even Bomber was showing his wheel there in one moment. It was anyone’s race. “I was giving it everything on that last corner and I could see someone was creeping around the inside. I knew there was a soft spot there and they could have got some drive and pipped me to the post. “It’s nice to have my name on this famous trophy again. There are a lot of good names on it. It’s nice to get my second win and not just be a one-time winner.“Everyone in that final could have won it and that’s how it is in the British Final. We are going to have some interesting finals to come but hopefully it doesn’t take me another seven years to win No. 3.”For Harris it was a devastating finale as he had briefly taken the lead heading into the last lap only to remarkably find himself relegated to the back by the chequered flag. He was so close to a first British crown since 2010, on a track which hardly favours him, and it would also have secured him a Wild Card berth for the upcoming Grand Prix events in Manchester.Harris said: “I’m obviously gutted not to come away with being on the podium or even getting the wild card. “It wasn’t bad going for someone who is not known for liking the Belle Vue track. But we found some speed, which was nice.“I think I passed them going down the home straight going into the last lap. I was in front as we hit turn one. Then I was just as quickly passed! “It was gutting coming back into the pits. But looking back on it, the oldest man in the field is still mixing it with these youngsters. I can’t be too disappointed, we put on the best show possible.”Harris will be back at the Adrian Flux Arena with the PSH Environmental Stars on Monday when they face Sheffield in an important Premiership clash.Lynn had a good home record against the Tigers last season and will need that to continue against a side led by the Holder brothers and including former Stars captains Josh Pickering and Lewis Kerr, along with their Rising Star from last year Anders Rowe.
