Hometown hero played interim charge of Fenmen

Hometown hero Alex Street has been placed in interim charge of Wisbech Town following the departure of Leon Mettam.

Street will take charge of the team for tomorrow’s trip to Godmanchester in the FA Vase.

The popular Street started his career at the Fenmen as a 17-year-old before enjoying four promotions with King’s Lynn Town during a ten-year spell with the Linnets.

Following his departure from Lynn, Street signed for Bedford Town, where he captained the side to Southern League Division One Central glory.

Street returned to Fountain Fresh Park last season during a brief spell as part of the club’s coaching team.

A war of words appears to have broken out between the Fenmen and former manager Mettam – but club chairman Paul Brenchley has asked for the full support of the town as Street steps into the hot seat.

Brenchley released a statement on the Wisbech Town FC discussion forum, saying: “Going forward to Saturday, Alex Street will take up the role as interim manager but we need all the support we can muster.”

Brenchley has also made it clear to supporters that although he expects Step 5 Wisbech to be challenging for the play-offs for the next level this season, eventual promotion to Step 3 would be a big financial burden on the club.

“The club’s ambition is to play at Step 4, but in all honesty Step 3 is beyond us financially,” he said.
