A West Norfolk cricketer has been selected for a national team which has been formed to raise the profile of the sport.

The Save Village Cricket XI (SVC) will be playing their inaugural fixture against social-media-superstars The Metronomes CC on Sunday, July 23.

Grimston Cricket Club’s Sam Adkin has been picked as a wicket-keeper/batsman for the national team.

Village cricket is said to be the heartbeat of the English Summer; however it is a sport in decline, and a national squad has been organised to raise the profile of the recreational game.

SVC skipper Ben Wilson explained how Grimston CC had caught his attention, saying: “My parents moved to Norfolk from Hertfordshire a few years ago and messaged me about the huge strides the Grimston Cricket Club have made, particularly around Youth Cricket.

“Grimston are just the type of club we are trying to promote, they are growing the game and securing the future of our sport.”

Sam Adkin is delighted to have made the team, and for the great work by all at Grimston CC to be picked out.

Adkin said: “We are working so hard to grow our club and get more people playing cricket; to have that work recognised with a call up the SVC squad is a big accolade and shows the national profile our club is getting. I’ll be miles out of my depth but looking forward to giving it my all.”

Whilst the SVC team will be made up of village cricketers from across the country, their opposition will feature several social media stars from the cricketing world, all promoting awareness of village cricket and inclusion, diversity and respect within the sport.

The match will be livestreamed online for those wishing to watch, search for “Save Village Cricket” on twitter, or for “The Metronomes CC” online.
