A former King’s Lynn Town goalkeeper was the hero as Notts County made a dramatic return to the Football League this afternoon.

Archie Mair, who played for the Linnets during a loan spell from Norwich City in their National League season of 2020/21, came off the bench to save two spot-kicks as Notts County defeated Chesterfield 4-3 on penalties after the game had finished 2-2 after extra-time.

Mair signed for the Magpies – also on-loan from the Canaries – earlier this year.

The giant 22-year-old was brought on with seconds of extra-time remaining and produced two brilliant saves in the penalty shootout to deny Darren Oldaker and Jeff King for the Spirites.

Mair made 27 starts for the Linnets during his long period at The Walks and his Wembley heroics saw Luke Williams’ side end their four-year quest to return to the Football League.
