Fakenham hit top spot in Thurlow Nunn Premier Division

Fakenham Town are the new leaders of the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division after a home win against Soham Town Rangers this afternoon.The Ghosts defeated Soham Town Rangers 1-0 in a tight affair at Clipbush Park while Downham Town got their home campaign off to a flying start with a 3-1 victory against Walsham le Willows 3-1 and Heacham were beaten 5-0 on their travels at Mulbarton Wanderers.The only goal of the game at Fakenham came in the second minute as Jake Watts netted his 11th goal of the season – just after Soham Town Rangers had struck the post at the other end.Alex Walpole’s side have now won six of their opening eight games this season ahead of a trip to rock-bottom Lakenheath next Friday night.Downham Town have made giant strides up the table in the last few weeks and, after four league games on their travels, they made a flying start on home turf by defeating the previous league leaders at the Memorial Field.After a goalless first period, Arthur Visocanskis opened the scoring with a good strike low into the corner five minutes into the second half.Visocanskis then laid the ball on a plate for Lagshan Sivakumar to double the home side’s advantage two minutes later and, although Walsham replied in the 61st minute, Eoin McQuaid sealed the three points by adding a third goal three minutes from time. Next weekend, Downham Town are in home action again when they entertain Stowmarket Town. Heacham got off to the worst possible start by conceding three goals in the opening 11 minutes at Mulbarton Wanderers.The Magpies, who have now lost four games on the bounce, shipped a fourth goal 11 minutes before the break before Wanderers rounded off the scoring with a fifth in the second half.Former Fakenham Town striker Ashley Jarvis registered twice against the Magpies, who host Yarmouth Town next weekend. In the First Division North, Swaffham Town lost 3-2 at Wivenhoe Town to sink to the bottom of the league standings.Next weekend, Holland will be the visitors to the Uncle Luke’s Stadium.
