Grimston Cricket Club’s Lions faced off against the finest from King’s Lynn’s 999 services team in an exciting floodlit match at Lynnsport. The match, despite the near-freezing conditions, demonstrated some superb all-round cricket skills and proved that cricket isn’t only a game for the summer.Having won the toss, Lions captain Sam Adkin chose to bat first, opening the batting alongside youth player Isaac Abel. The pair made a steady start seeing off the pace of opening bowler Chris Banks. As the 999 bowling attack began to tire, middle-order partners Leo Woodcock and Crystal Pegg began to score freely, and the batting was closed out with aplomb by Liam Woodcock and U15s player Ben Taylor Bunting. The standout fielding performance was from wicket-keeper Dan Edwards.GCC Lions scored 117 runs. During the innings break, both teams enjoyed a hot cricket tea from Brocky’s BBQ, with £140 going to Grimston CC. KL 999 CC opened the batting with Ross Edwards, getting off to a disastrous start being clean-bowled by Liam Woodcock with the first delivery of the innings.Adkin was next to bowl and was summarily dispatched to all corners of the ground with his over costing an expensive nine runs. GCC Lion’s bowling improved from that low point, with the game finely poised as the final partnership of Police Cadet Sarah Wright and Lucas Fowler took to the pitch. On the penultimate ball, with the scores even and the atmosphere tense, Wright executed a perfect cut shot to send the ball skidding away and secure the win for the KL 999 team.KL 999 won by 119 runs to 117. 999 skipper Daryl Grief reflected on a great occasion, saying “Although we should take a moment to celebrate a first win for the 999 team, the real winner was the developing friendship with all at Grimston Cricket Club.”We look forward to an invite to GCC for them to get their revenge (in warmer and less foggy conditions).”
