West Norfolk rugby star Georgie Lingham jetted to the sun this week to play for the Hammerheads in one of rugby’s most famous fixtures – the Dubai 7s.
Lingham is building up her game time and pitch presence ahead of the Olympics next summer.
As a North Wootton native, Lingham has been part of the local rugby club since the start of her journey, already having had the honour of representing England and setting an example for local girls who are either playing or getting into the sport through her coaching and support of the youth girls and women’s teams.
Lingham said: “Showing girls that they can also be in my shoes is a really important motivation for me when I play.
“I’m super grateful for being where I am today, but women’s and girls rugby is still not as recognised as it should be, because the skills and talent needed to compete in this game are equally high.
“If I can inspire just one girl to put on a pair of boots and take to the pitch, then I’ll be happy.”
Meanwhile, in a show of dominance, a superlative six of West Norfolk women’s 1st XV squad have been selected to play for their county against age-old rivals, Suffolk today
Not only are the women fielding more players from one club than any other on the team sheet, but this selection is also a higher number than the previous county-level representations from West Norfolk RFC across any other senior or youth team.
Head coach Jane Middleton-Jones said ‘I am bursting with pride to see so many of our talented women’s team representing our county at this level.
“They put the work in week after week, and I can’t wait to see how they play on Wednesday night, with the rest of the squad and the club cheering them on.”
West Warriors 1st XV travel to Kesteven for the next league game on Sunday.
