Downham up to third; Ghosts suffer late heartache, while Magpies are held at home

Downham Town continue to defy the odds in their first season in the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division.

A fine second-half display at Woodbridge Town saw the team overturn a 2-1 deficit at the interval into a 4-2 victory.

Owen McQuaid (2), Simon Bird and Jacob White were all on target for the visitors.

Joint Downham Town managers Craig Dickson and Dale Stokes have seen their side win six of their seven games in the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division after Saturday's 4-2 victory at Woodbridge Town.
Joint Downham Town managers Craig Dickson and Dale Stokes have seen their side win six of their seven games in the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division after Saturday’s 4-2 victory at Woodbridge Town.

The victory leaves Downham sitting third in the table, just behind Lakenheath and Thetford at the top.

Joint boss Craig Dickson said: “It was a game of two halves really. First half Woodbridge edged it and probably deserved to be in front.

“The second half we upped our quality on the ball and moved it a lot quicker and at times we were unplayable.

“The boys know how quickly a game can change and within five minutes of the second half you could see what the pattern of the game was going to be.

“It was just about taking the chances that arose and we took enough to turn the game around.”

Downham have now won six of their opening seven games – but their feet remain firmly on the ground.

“We’ve had a good start to the season but we’re still adapting the league, so we’ll take each game as it comes,” said Dickson.

“It’s obviously nice to have a positive start but I wouldn’t say we are pinching ourselves.

“We’ve said for a while that we believe we can be competitive in this league and although it’s a better start than we probably expected, we know we are capable of these mini runs.”

McQuaid has now scored three goals in his last two games and Dickson said: “Eoin is a player who we’ve tried to sign for a number of years, pretty much for the moment we took over the club full time.

“He’s been a great addition to the group and the boys love him. He’s always had an eye for goal and he now started his own little run of goals.”

Elsewhere in the Premier Division, a Fakenham Town comeback wasn’t enough as the Ghosts went down 4-3 to Lakenheath in a seven-goal thriller at Clipbush Park.

The hosts were left heartbroken by an injury-time goal from a corner after fighting back from three goals down at the interval.

Jack Robinson, Fin Whiteley and Jay Mayhill all found the back of the net for Andy Cunningham’s side.

Heacham stretched their unbeaten league run to four games with a goalless draw at home to Walsham le Willows.

On Tuesday night, the Magpies host Dereham at the Heacham Sports Field.

In the First Division North, Swaffham Town slumped to a third successive league loss with a 5-2 defeat at Leiston U23s.

Harvey Neale and Tyler Reeve were on target for the Pedlars, who travel to Diss Town on Tuesday night.
