Emerging Zimbabwe held off a spirited chase from Downham Stow CC to seal a 16-run victory in an entertaining 50-over contest on Sunday.

Batting first, Zimbabwe were anchored by a superb innings from R. Patel, who crafted a commanding 132 from 136 balls.

Displaying excellent placement and patience, Patel struck 14 boundaries in a knock that gave his side the backbone they needed.

Despite losing opener M. Welch for a duck in the first over, Patel found support from L Chando (29) and later from the middle order.

Contributions from T Makoni (18), T Chisvo (19), and a lively unbeaten 33 from M Shungu pushed the visitors to a competitive total of 279 for 8.

Extras also played their part, with Downham conceding 20 wides in the innings.

The Downham Stow bowlers worked hard on a good batting surface.

Arthur Wilcox led the attack with 3 for 44, while Rajan Singh (2 for 56) and Saranga Rajaguru (2 for 47) chipped in at crucial moments.

Yet, they could not dislodge Patel until the 48th over, by which time Zimbabwe were well placed for a strong finish.

Chasing 280, Downham’s reply began poorly as Olly Hooker fell in the opening over.

But the hosts fought back with aggressive intent. Benjamin Wilcox’s quick-fire 26 from 16 balls included three sixes and gave momentum to the innings.

Nat Laws then compiled a well-crafted 41, combining with Patrick Yates to steady the chase after early jitters.

Yates went on to anchor the innings with a patient 52, while Arthur Wilcox struck 54 from 70 balls to keep Downham in touch with the required rate.

The pair’s 95-run partnership for the fourth wicket brought the game alive, raising hopes of a memorable win. Rajaguru added further impetus with 40 from 36, but his dismissal at 234 proved a turning point.

With the pressure mounting, Zimbabwe turned to seamer A. Vhezha, who delivered a decisive spell.

He ripped through the middle and lower order, finishing with superb figures of 5 for 63.

His strikes, including the key wickets of Wilcox, Rajaguru, and Muggeridge, swung the match in the visitors’ favour just as Downham looked set to snatch victory.

Despite late resistance, the hosts closed on 263 for 9, falling short by 16 runs.

For Zimbabwe, Patel’s century was the bedrock of their triumph, but Vhezha’s five-wicket haul ensured they defended their total under pressure.

Downham, meanwhile, will take plenty of positives from pushing their opponents so close, with notable batting displays from Yates, Wilcox, and Rajaguru.

On Saturday, Downham Stow are back in East Anglian Premier League action when they entertain Ashmanhaugh and Barton Wanderers at Stow Hall.
