City were frustrated until Michael Olise brought down Ilkay Gundogan 13 minutes from time.
Haaland coolly sent Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita the wrong way as City kept up the pressure on Arsenal, who play their game in hand at Fulham on Sunday.
Bournemouth stunned Liverpool on the south coast as Jurgen Klopp’s side came crashing back to earth after smashing seven goals past Manchester United.
Philip Billing’s sixth goal of the season secured a 1-0 win for the Cherries, who started the day bottom of the Premier League but are now outside the relegation zone.
Billing struck from eight yards after 28 minutes as Bournemouth avenged their 9-0 defeat at Liverpool in August.
Liverpool, back in action six days after their historic 7-0 Anfield victory over United, saw their miserable day completed by Mohamed Salah’s second-half penalty miss.
Improving Chelsea claimed a third successive victory with a 3-1 win at Leicester.
Ben Chilwell volleyed them ahead against his old club after 11 minutes before Joao Felix saw his effort ruled out for offside.
Leicester levelled through Patson Daka but Kai Havertz restored Chelsea’s lead six minutes into first-half stoppage time with a wonderful dinked finish.
Mykhailo Mudryk also saw an effort disallowed before Mateo Kovacic sealed victory 12 minutes from time.
Leicester – supported from the stands by off-duty Match of the Day host Gary Lineker – were reduced to 10 men by Wout Faes’ late dismissal and are now just one point above the bottom three zone after a fourth straight league defeat.
Tottenham boosted their top-four hopes with a 3-1 home defeat of Nottingham Forest.
Harry Kane scored twice – taking him to 20 in the Premier League this season – and Son Heung-min increased Spurs’ lead in the second half.
Joe Worrall gave Forest hope nine minutes from time with a firm header, but the visitors passed up the opportunity of a second when Fraser Forster saved Andre Ayew’s late penalty.
Leeds slipped back into the bottom three after drawing 2-2 with Brighton at Elland Road.
Alexis Mac Allister’s ninth goal of the season was quickly cancelled out by Patrick Bamford’s superb 20-yard strike before the break.
Brighton were back in front when Jack Harrison turned the ball into his own net after 61 minutes.
Harrison made amends with a second Leeds equaliser 12 minutes from time, although Javi Gracia’s side are now in 19th place.
Everton defended Dwight McNeil’s quickfire goal to end Brentford’s long unbeaten run with a 1-0 victory at Goodison Park.
McNeil struck after just 35 seconds – Everton’s earliest winning goal in the ground’s 131-year history – as the Toffees climbed two points clear of the relegation zone.
Brentford went close late on but could not find an equaliser to keep alive an unbeaten league run which had stretched back to October.
