The profile of bowls in West Norfolk is set for a major boost as lifelong enthusiast Paul Brandon teams up with the Lynn News to deliver dedicated weekly coverage of the sport.

Under the new plans, it is hoped to launch a new bowls page aimed at keeping the community fully up to date with league standings, results, and features on both outdoor and indoor play.

Brandon, who has been active in the sport for more than 30 years, will be the driving force behind the initiative, acting as a link between local clubs, leagues, and associations.

“This is a golden opportunity the Lynn News is providing,” said Brandon, who represents Shouldham and Wiggenhall Bowls Clubs, as well as Norfolk (NBA) and Eastern Counties in friendly matches.

“We want to raise the profile of bowls, encourage new players of all ages and abilities, and keep the local community informed about everything happening on the greens across West Norfolk.”

Coverage will extend beyond just scores, with plans to include cup competitions, club features, promotions for taster sessions, updates on Lynnsport’s bowls regeneration, and even memory-lane photographs of past teams.

There will also be a spotlight on younger players, breaking down perceptions of bowls as a sport only for older generations.

Brandon emphasised the importance of making bowls accessible to all, including those with disabilities, and believes that the weekly page can help showcase the sport’s inclusive spirit.

“The list of potential stories is endless,” he added.

“This is about celebrating every corner of our local bowls scene.”

As part of the project’s launch, Brandon is compiling a database of contacts from clubs and leagues to ensure comprehensive coverage.

He is appealing to secretaries and committee members to share their details, particularly from leagues where contact information is still needed, including the Rosie, Middleton and Denton Leagues, King’s Lynn Ladies, and Downham Triples.

Regular updates from league officials – ideally at least fortnightly – are expected to form the backbone of the weekly coverage.

Brandon’s enthusiasm for the sport remains undimmed.

Having recently taken up indoor bowls at Lynnsport, he is keen to show how the game offers something for everyone, from grassroots beginners to seasoned county players.
