West Norfolk athletes refused to let the downpours dampen their spirits at the Eastern Area Athletics Championships.

The intense heat gave way to downpours, making life a bit cooler but trickier for the athletes taking part.

Several West Norfolk athletes took part in what is a potential medal-winning event, celebrating the best of the region.

The previous weekend, second-claim athlete Charlie Broad had to battle the heat when he took part in the prestigious English Schools championships at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.

The event is a high-level competition where athletes must hit an impressive qualifying mark to even compete.

The Downham-based teenager represented Norfolk in shot put.

He was seeded third competing and came away with a fantastic fourth place.

It was a great result for him in what was the toughest shot competition for the U17 age group for many years.
