Saturday saw a momentous day for West Norfolk Rugby Club as both the men’s and ladies senior sides played centenary matches in front of a jam-packed Gatehouse Lane crowd. There was a very well-attended pre-match brunch before the ladies kicked off against a Baa-Baas Norfolk side in the earlier of the two games. The ladies had been due to take on Diss in the Norfolk Cup semi-final until their opponents conceded the game.West went on to win the game, showcasing their determination and skill, cementing their league performance which has seen them go unbeaten as champions. The men’s game kicked-off at 3pm, which saw the current West Norfolk first team take on a Chairman’s invitational XI led by former West Norfolk players Monty and Ed Maule consisting of a mix of former WN players, players from clubs across Norfolk and several players travelling from Monty’s current team Market Harborough. An extremely competitive first half, which showcased some fantastic running rugby, saw the Chairman’s XV go into half-time with a narrow lead. The second half would see the introduction of several West Norfolk ‘old boys’ who gave the current firsts a run for their money. But eventually fitness and consistency showed and West Norfolk ran out winners with a couple of late tries in what was a highly competitive and entertaining game. West Man of the Match was prop Will Allen whilst for the Chairman’s XV former West Norfolk player and Leicester Tiger development player Harry Mahoney, who had travelled from Scotland, took the honors.Following the games, presentations were made by club president Steve Smith and vice-president John Moses to the captains of both sides.Other highlights were the official first use of the new changing rooms and outside bar area. There was a fantastic, friendly, family atmosphere that was on display throughout the afternoon.Huge thanks go to everyone involved with organising, supporting and playing on a day which the club can be wholeheartedly proud of celebrating 100 years of West Norfolk rugby.Next up is the Norfolk Big Weekend with West Norfolk Rugby Club hosting county finals for all men’s, ladies’ and junior sides from across the county on Saturday, May 3, and Sunday, May 4.
