King’s Lynn Town 1 Scunthorpe United 0King’s Lynn Town stoked the flames of their play-off push by beating morning National League North leaders Scunthorpe United at The Walks.Gold Omotayo scored his fifth goal in nine games with a first-half header in front of a bumper Good Friday crowd of 2,326.Lynn began the afternoon seventh in the table and finished it in sixth, while Scunthorpe slipped from first to third. The Lynn players were out on their feet at the final whistle after running themselves into the ground to extend their recent record to just one defeat in nine.King’s Lynn Town manager Adam Lakeland tinkered with his starting line-up by making two changes.Defenders Josh Coulson and Kian Ronan came into the team as Freddie Sass and Josh Coulson dropped to the bench. Of the former Linnets playing for the Iron, Michael Clunan and Tyler both started while Andrew Boyce was among the substitutes. It took ten minutes for a shot in anger from any side, but when it did, Lynn goalkeeper Paul Jones was up to the task of diverting Alfie Beestin’s long-range effort behind for a corner.Lynn responded by taking the lead in the 13th minute as the game exploded into life.Johnson won the ball before it eventually found its way to Hmami on the right, who delivered the ball on a plate for Omotayo to head home from six yards out. The fingertips of Jones kept out a fizzing effort from Will Evans as the Iron came close to levelling matters after 28 minutes.Ex-Linnet Denton went into the book for a rash challenge on Ronan down the right and Matty Warburton was booked for dissent in the aftermath. Tempers became frayed between both benches as visiting manager Andy Butler took exception to a strong, but fair, challenge from Kyle Callan-McFadden on Beestin.Jones saved well to his left to keep out a free-kick from Callum Roberts as Lynn took a 1-0 lead into the break. A mix-up between Ross Fitzsimons and Denton gifted Lynn the opportunity to double their advantage three minutes after the restart, but Warburton lofted his shot over the woodwork with just the visiting goalkeeper to beat.Lynn needed a little bit of luck on their side and it was Iron substitute Carlton Ubaezuonu who provided it.Ubaezuonu had only been on the pitch a minute before blocking a goalbound shot from Mo Fadera on the Lynn line.Roberts fired wide and saw another effort saved by the legs of Jones at his near post as the visitors upped the pressure going into the final 20 minutes. Defender Tom Wilson then made a brilliant block as the Lynn players continued to put their bodies on the line.Scunthorpe forced a succession of corners in the final minutes and Beestin blazed a last-gasp effort over the woodwork – but Lynn deservedly held on.The Lynn players left the field to a standing ovation – and rightly so – after giving everything to the cause on a dramatic afternoon.King’s Lynn Town: Jones, Ronan, McFadden, Taylor, Coulson, Hmami (Sass 84), Omotayo (Margetts 81), Wilson, Crowe, Warburton (Crane 68), Johnson.
