West Norfolk throwers in fine form

Lee Valley Athletic Centre was the venue for the Senior and Under 20’s South of England Indoor Athletics Championships.West Norfolk’s senior athletes, and brothers, Alfie and Charlie Williams competed together in the shot put final.Alfie pulled out an amazing performance to win the gold medal with a season’s best performance of 15.19m, and in doing so set a new county record.Brother Charlie finished fourth – just seven centimetres off the bronze medal.Charlie put up a valiant fight of it and set a new personal best in round one which he followed up by beating his newly set best again in the fifth round.An excellent day for both lads.Alfie went on to throw again the next day at the Loughborough Open and finished with a 14.77m put and second place.Alfie will go for gold for Loughborough University at the British University Championships (BUCs) after his selection was confirmed this week, whilst brother Charlie will be representing Sheffield Hallam University. This annual indoor event will take place in Sheffield’s EIS on February 15. The siblings will go head-to-head before BUCs in the shot put at the University Steel Cup, also at the EIS in Sheffield, this week.The current UK ranked second in the under-17 age group, Charlie Broad, also competed at Loughborough on Sunday.Broad finished in the top spot for his age group and equalled his own county and club record with a massive 15.84m put.This is excellent preparation for the upcoming UK Indoor Age Group National Championships this coming Sunday, also up in Sheffield.Exciting times for Norfolk throwers.
