Smith stars with five-wicket haul for Snettisham

Kirstie Smith picked up the first-ever five-wicket haul in Snettisham’s history as the team proved too strong for Brisley.Smith’s outstanding performance not only shifted the momentum decisively in her team’s favour but also earned her recognition at the top of the Shell UK Norfolk Women’s Outdoor Cricket League Hall of Fame for her remarkable bowling figures of 5-8.She will need to wait until the season closes in September to find out if she retains that title.Electing to bat first, Brisley struggled against a fierce fielding display from Snettisham.Ellie Bower set the tone for the evening match and executed a stunning run-out from the deep, showcasing her precision.Not to be outdone by her daughter, Tracey Bower followed by showcasing her bowling prowess by taking a brace of wickets.On her debut for Snettisham, Julie Fielder took a superb catch at short range, injuring herself in the process, to dismiss another batter. Snettisham’s brave fielding continued to be on full display as Jo Reid put her body on the line to stop the ball from reaching the boundary on numerous occasions, exemplifying her commitment and determination to save crucial runs for her team. Youngster Alexia Lowes showcased her strong arm, impressing with accurate throws and decisive stops alongside solid fielding displays from captain Michelle Knott and Tracey Reynolds.Special recognition goes to Tiffany Turner, who, despite initial reservations about the hardball format, showed dedication and unwavering support for the team by stepping in on the day and engaging with her teammates and umpire from the field with lively banter.However, Smith stole the spotlight with a bowling masterclass, leaving spectators stunned as she achieved an impressive five-wicket haul. Consistently troubling the opposition batters with pinpoint accuracy, she dismantled the Brisley batting line-up, clinching her fourth and fifth wickets on the final two balls of the game.Snettisham’s exceptional fielding restricted Brisley to a modest score of 74, setting up a manageable target for the chase. Despite the wicket being cruel, impressive batting displays from Bonnie Parsons, Brittany Rose, and Julie Fielder saw Snettisham over the line to secure their first hardball win of the season after a controversial draw at Sheringham in their opening game of the season.As always, Brisley proved to be welcoming hosts, showcasing exemplary sportsmanship throughout. Over the past few years, Snettisham’s women’s cricket team has shown remarkable growth, evolving into a formidable force with each passing season, in both the hardball and softball format. IIt’s inspiring to witness their rise in strength and depth, reflecting the expanding landscape of competitive cricket for women within West Norfolk.Snettisham welcomes new players and holds training sessions every Tuesday evening from 6pm at Snettisham playing fields.
