Christopher Nolanâs epic biopic Oppenheimer has swept the Oscars, winning seven awards.
The film about J Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist described as the father of the atomic bomb, was named best picture while Irish star Cillian Murphy won best actor and Nolan took the best director award.
Robert Downey Jr was named best supporting actor for his turn as Lewis Strauss, head of the Atomic Energy Commission.
The film was also celebrated for its editing, score and cinematography.
The best picture prize, the final trophy of the night, was handed out by veteran actor Al Pacino, 83, who announced the winner in an unconventional manner without the customary fanfare.
He looked at the card and said: âI see Oppenheimer.â
Collecting his directing trophy, Nolan thanked his wife and producer of the film, Emma Thomas, as well as Murphy.
Nolan said: âThank you for those who have been there for me and believed in me my whole career.â
He added: âTo the Academy, just to say movies are just a little bit over 100 years old, I mean imagine being there 100 years into painting or theatre.
âWe donât know where this incredible journey is going from here. But to know that you think that Iâm a meaningful part of it means the world to me. Thank you very much.â
Irish actor Murphy, 47, kissed his wife, the artist Yvonne McGuinness, before heading to the stage, where he said making the film had âbeen the wildest, most creatively satisfying journeyâ.
âI am a very proud Irishman standing here tonight,â he added.
Acknowledging that âwe are all living in Oppenheimerâs world nowâ, he added: âI would like to dedicate this to the peacemakers of the world.â
At the end of his speech, he spoke in Irish, saying âgo raibh maith agatâ which means thank you.
Emma Stone was named best actress for the surreal comedy Poor Things, about a woman who is given the brain of a baby.
The US star, who already has an Oscar for her performance in La La Land, revealed she was battling a wardrobe malfunction as she walked up on stage to collect her prize, and blamed Ryan Goslingâs rousing performance of the Barbie song Iâm Just Ken.
She said: âMy dress is broken, I think it happened during Iâm Just Ken.â
She appeared visibly overwhelmed and wept as she said: âI donât know what Iâm saying.â
She added: âThe other night I was panicking, as you can see it happens a lot, that something like this could happen.â
After thanking her family, she saved her final thanks for âmy daughter, who is going to be three in three days and who turned our whole lives technicolourâ.
She added: âI love you bigger than the whole sky, my girl.â
Before exiting the stage, she said: âDonât look at the back of my dress.â
DaâVine Joy Randolph was named best supporting actress for her role as a grieving cook in The Holdovers, about a grumpy teacher who stays at school over the holidays.
The highly publicised battle between Barbie, Greta Gerwigâs film about the Mattel doll, and Oppenheimer, failed to materialise as Gerwigâs film won only one award â the best original song prize for What Was I Made For? by Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas OâConnell.
Killers Of The Flower Moon, Martin Scorseseâs western about the murders of wealthy members of the Osage tribe in the 1920s, was completely shut out.
The Zone Of Interest won the best international feature Oscar for the United Kingdom.
British director Jonathan Glazer accepted the award and said: âAll of our choices were made to confront us in the present. Not to say âLook what they did then, but look what we do nowâ.â
He added: âOur film shows where dehumanisation leads at its worst â itâs shaped all of our past and present.
âRight now we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people.
âWhether itâs the victims of October 7 in Israel or of the ongoing attack on Gaza, all are victims of this dehumanisation.â
The Academy Award for original screenplay was presented to French filmmakers Justine Triet and Arthur Harari for courtroom drama Anatomy Of A Fall.
Cord Jefferson won the best adapted screenplay Oscar for American Fiction, about a black author who writes the kind of book he despises.
The ceremony, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, saw a string of past winners take to the stage to honour this yearâs nominees.
There was also excitement when Ryan Gosling reprised his role of Ken from Barbie for a rendition of the nominated original song, Iâm Just Ken, from the film.
He was joined by co-stars including Ncuti Gatwa, Simu Liu and Kingsley Ben-Adir for the high energy number, for which he donned a pink glittery suit and gloves and was joined by Guns Nâ Roses star Slash for a guitar solo.
