Having progressed to the last 32 of the EH Plate competition Pelicans knew that Cambridge City would be a tough opponent. The Pelicans squad of current and former players worked hard for each other and kept Cambridge at bay for the first 25 minutes but the deadlock was finally broken as a result of a well-worked short corner routine.Kirstie Smith performed heroics in goal and the defensive unit of Jane Carter, Laura Culley-Tea, Hannah Aldous, Tracy Bower and Judith Stoutt combined well to keep the Cambridge attacking play at bay.Pelicans finished the first half with some great attacking play of their own resulting in a short corner which was converted only for the goal to be ruled out for an infringement.Visiting Cambridge led 3-0 at the interval. In the second half, the midfield trio of Sam Tea, Katy White and Clair Morton worked hard to create attacking opportunities for the forward line of Nic Lankfer, Dawn Austin, Amy Anderson and Jane Proctor.Unfortunately, the National League experience of Cambridge was unrelenting and a string of well-rehearsed short corners and slick passing enabled them to extend their lead.Ultimately the stronger team won on the day but it was great to see the efforts of the Pelicans Ladies, both on the pitch, and in the crowd of former players supporting on the day.PoM: Katy White.
