King’s Lynn Town have strengthened their squad with two new signings ahead of their National League North trip to Hereford tomorrow.
The Linnets have brought in former Boston United and Scunthorpe United frontman Johnny Margetts from Matlock Town and former West Bromwich Albion player Quevin Castro
Margetts arrives on a permanent deal while Quevin Castro has arrived on a month’s loan deal from the Minstermen.
Last season at Stamford, Margetts bagged 57 goals in 64 appearances, having seen a return of 25 from 18 matches the previous season at Belper Town.
In the 20/21 season, he netted 26 times in 29 appearances for Frickley Athletic.
Manager Adam Lakeland was particularly pleased with the latest addition to his squad, saying “I’m delighted to bring Jonny to the club.
“He is a proven goal scorer having scored goals throughout his career at several clubs, particularly in recent years where his goals-to-games ratio is unrivalled.
“He is a natural finisher, goal-seeker and has excellent movement in and around the final third.”
“As well as goals, Jonny brings a wealth of experience to the group which is something you are always looking to add, and having recently turned 30, I believe he has a few good years left in him and that we are getting him at the peak of his career.”
Having started his career with Hull City, Margetts failed to make a first-team appearance, but over two years he notably spent brief spells playing in the Football League for Cambridge United, Tranmere Rovers, Lincoln City and Scunthorpe United.
Margetts has played at non-league level for Gainsborough Trinity, Harrogate Town, Stockport County, Altrincham, Southport, Boston United, Matlock Town, Tadcaster Albion and Frickley Athletic.
Castro has enjoyed a local career, growing up in Thetford and being selected for the Sporting CP academy in Portugal – as well as playing for many local semi-pro sides such as Mildenhall, Thetford and Bury.
He joined West Brom in 2021 and had loan spells with Burton Albion and Notts County, where he scored four goals in 14 appearances.
On the arrival of Castro, boss Lakeland said: “Castro is a player with great physique and presence on a football pitch. He is athletic, has a good engine, good technical ability and has a goal in him.
“He offers different attributes and qualities to the other personnel we have in those advanced midfield areas, giving us further options.”
Pending FA and National League approval, Castro will be available for selection for tomorrow’s visit to Hereford.
Lynn have only left Edgar Street pointless three times in 12 previous visits over the years with a Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain goal good enough to earn them victory last season.
Following Buxton’s 1-0 victory at Chester in midweek, Lynn can’t afford to lose any more ground on the side’s above them in the league table.
Banbury United and Spennymoor – who meet each other tomorrow – both have two games in hand on Lynn while Southport have one.
