Claimer helps herself to Fakenham double

A double by claiming jockey Lilly Pinchin highlighted an additional meeting at Fakenham after the track had lost its first two meetings of the season to waterlogged going.

Riding for Newmarket trainer James Owen, she took the opening Sky Bet Fillies Race over two miles on Royal Athena after a tussle up the home straight with odds-on favourite Grain Of Hope under Dylan Whelan.

Refusing to wilt the pairing crossed the line two lengths to the good.

The double was completed in the fourth race of the afternoon, the Gatsby’s England Business Awards Maiden Hurdle over two miles and four furlongs when Star Legend overtook long-time leader Shinji round the home turn to break away from the leading bunch and win from Colonel Whizz by one and a half lengths.

The owner of Gatsby’s Hairdressers on Bridge Street, Fakenham, Carol McCubbin, presented a memento to the winning owner. She had also chosen the best turned out horse in the race, presenting a prize of £50 to the person in charge.

The Save Our Sport Hurdle over two miles was won by outsider Good Time Ahead at 22/1.

Ridden by Harry Reed for Jim and Suzi Best they left favourite Sailed Away under Ciaran Gethings well adrift with a confident finish.

The Sky Bet Chase over two miles and five furlongs went to Scene One ridden by Bryony Frost for Lucy Wadham.

She overtook long-time leader Icaque De L’Isle and broke away from the leading bunch to win by three lengths.

The Win £50K With ITV7 For Free Mares Hurdle produced a bold front-running display from Crem Fresh, ridden by Gavin Sheehan for Barry Brennan.

Whilst favourite Mistral Nell made up ground the result was never in doubt with the winner holding on by four lengths.

The closest finish of the day came in the Sky Bet Chase over three miles.

At the sharp end after a closely-fought contest it took a photo to separate two horses crossing the line together.

Outsider Jony Max, under Ellis Collier, was adjudged the winner by a neck over favourite Kadex, ridden by Bryony Frost.

The meeting closed with a National Hunt Flat Race over two miles which was convincingly won by Ami Bondhu under James Davies for trainer Nick Gifford.

Mistral Blue, ridden by Connor Brace, kept on well but never threatened the wide-margin winner.

The Greene King Raceday fixture is on Tuesday November 21 when the first race is due off at 12.20pm.
