Captain Jane Proctor scored the only goal of the game as Pelicans Ladies made a winning start at Cambridge South 3s on Saturday.
With a few players missing due to injury mixed with the heat it could’ve been a tough game but Pelicans delivered a dominant display in their East Women’s Division 2 North West opener.
After efforts from Daisy Nicholas and Megan Antliff, Proctor was on hand to tuck away the rebound to complete a fine passing move from the visitors.
The visiting skipper had a second goal disallowed in the first half while the home side rarely troubled Pelicans at the back.
Pelicans came close to adding to their tally from a number of penalty corner routines and in the second half a strike from Kiona Sequeira narrowly missed Proctor’s dive for a deflection.
Player-of-the-match was Karise Sherry for a hard-working performance on her return to the team.
On Saturday, Pelicans host Peterborough 3rds at Alive Lynnsport (12.30pm).
Pelicans Ladies 2nds found themselves on the wrong end of a 11-1 defeat against Spalding 2nds in East Women’s Division 3 North West.
Tracy Brown found the back of the net for Pelicans, who remained positive and motivated throughout the game against a well-drilled Spalding outfit.
Player of the match: Hannah Howes.
The Ladies 3rds made a strong start to their East Women’s Division 5 North West campaign with a 2-2 draw at home to Ely City.
Pelicans team included four debutants, who each showed their skills and stamina in hot conditions.
Goalkeeper Jemima Smith proved her abilities with several strong saves in the final quarter as Ely stepped up their attack.
Pelicans twice took the lead in the match, only for Ely to restore parity both times.
Amelia Hallum fired in the ball from a rebound off the visiting goalkeeper for the first goal before Dawn Austin scored Pelicans’ second following a fine ball in from Lucy Pepper.
Ely levelled for a second time in the final 10 minutes.
Thanks to Chris and Craig for their support on the sidelines.
Player-of-the-match: Jemima Smith.
