King’s Lynn Town boss Tommy Widdrington has stepped away from his managerial position at The Walks.
Widdrington – who was on contract at The Walks until the end of next season – informed the club of his decision after this afternoon’s 1-0 victory over Chorley in the National League North.
The decision comes with Lynn sitting second in the league table – five points behind league leaders AFC Fylde – and pushing for promotion.
A tweet from club a short while ago read: “The club are disappointed to have been told by our manager Tommy Widdrington this evening that he is resigning in order to take up an alternative post at another club.
“Tommy is under contract with us, and the club in question have not contacted us to reach an agreement and nor has Tommy sought to reach an agreement that would allow us to waive the contractual position.
“We very much hope a swift resolution will be reached, as an alternative to a legal process.
“Meanwhile, given Tommy has made it clear that he has resigned with immediate effect (irrespective of his contractual obligations to the club) the search for a new manager begins now.
“We would not stand in the way of a manager (or player) who wished to progress to a higher level and has the opportunity to do so, but such matters need to be dealt with professionally and legally.”
The former Southampton and Grimsby midfielder and Bristol Rovers director of football was appointed as Linnets boss in December 2021, replacing Ian Culverhouse.
Lynn were second from bottom of the National League at the time and Widdrington was unable to save the club from the drop.
This season, Lynn were in a strong position, leading the National League North table until being overtaken by AFC Fylde in recent weeks.
It is hoped that the King’s Lynn coaching staff of Hugo Langton and Mark Hughes will remain in the dugout for the remainder of this season.
