Downham Town manager Dale Stokes admitted his side were lucky to escape with a point after their first-ever home game at Step 4 ended in a 1-1 draw against Takeley.

Town struggled to find their rhythm at the Memorial Field and had to rely on a late own goal to earn them a share of the spoils against their Essex visitors on Bank Holiday Monday.

Stokes was brutally honest in his assessment of the performance, saying: “It was the worst we’ve played so far this season.

“We just never really got into any flow or stamped any authority on the game.

“We allowed them to dominate too easily and do what they wanted. It was disappointing overall as we are so much better than that.”

Downham, who have made an encouraging start to Step 4 football, found themselves on the back foot for long periods but showed resilience to keep Takeley at bay.

“We defended ok at times, but looked nervous and hesitant,” Stokes admitted.

“I know we’re not going to control matches like we have in previous seasons, but it was more about how we reacted to second balls and the way we played in possession. That’s something we’ve got to learn from.”

Despite their struggles, Town earned a share of the spoils and Stokes took heart from his side’s battling qualities.

“There’s been so many occasions in the past where we’ve deserved things and haven’t got them,” he said.

“This is the first time in a while I feel we’ve nicked a point, so I’m pleased in that sense.

“We’ve been on the receiving end countless times, so I’m glad we’ve been on the other side of it.

“The fight and character the boys have shown so far this season, I think they deserve that point.”

Downham now faces another frustrating break from league action, with no fixture this weekend due to Redbridge’s involvement in the FA Cup.

“Personally, I’d rather have a game,” Stokes added.

“That’s two weekends now since the season started that we’ve had no fixture and it doesn’t really help with finding momentum and rhythm.

“Last time it was 11 days without a game and now it’s going to be 12, so it’s a bit frustrating. Sometimes you need a break if it’s been hectic, but this one isn’t really much help.”
