With no structured table tennis in King’s Lynn anymore, players are going further afield for competitive play.
Most players are now competing in the Wisbech area from a table tennis centre in Leverington, which has excellent facilities.
The sport has seen a resurgence locally, across all ages, from 7 to 88, and the Wisbech League can now boast 3 divisions, something not seen for several decades.
A very highly rated professional coach, Steve Goodale, from King’s Lynn, organises both group and one-to-one coaching sessions.
Now working full-time in this capacity, Goodale also spearheads the local youth development in both coaching and organising competitions.
There are also a few local players who will be competing at higher levels.
Wayne Mason has won both the King’s Lynn and Wisbech Men’s Singles titles on numerous occasions, as well as the Cambridgeshire Men’s Singles Title.
Mason hopes to continue his rise up the English National Veterans Ranking by getting into the top ten following an impressive win at a Masters tournament last year.
He will be concentrating on his table tennis in the very strong Norwich Premier League as well as playing for Wensum in Division National 1A in the British League, together with the County Vetts League and various Vetts Masters tournaments around the country.
Paul Rich, a promising junior in his time, winning both the Norfolk under 11 and under 13 titles, and also a junior and senior county representative, had 20 years away from the sport before returning a few years ago as a Veteran.
He will be competing in both the Wisbech and Norwich Leagues, representing Norfolk at County Vetts level as well as competing in Masters Vetts tournaments nationwide.
Likewise, David Lemmon will be competing in the Wisbech and Norwich Leagues and County Vetts for Norfolk.
Their progress and results, and those of other local players, will appear in Your Local Paper regularly
