Super One InterMAX kart champion Jenson Sayell had mixed fortunes at Glam-Y-Gors in Wales at the weekend. After a third-place podium in Round Three on Saturday, the Marshland St James driver had hoped to improve in Sunday’s fourth round. But his day ended in a horrific accident and a trip to the medical centre. Thankfully, the youngster was declared well with multiple bruises but no serious injury.Friday testing went well in hot weather, but after a good first practice on Saturday, qualifying again proved difficult and Sayell finished sixth. In Heat One, Sayell made up three places on the first lap and finished in third, he was later promoted to second when the runner-up was given a five-place penalty for contravening flag signals. The team had the carburettor overhauled before heat two, hoping to improve pace. Sayell struggled to finish fifth however, unable to stay in contention at the front.Sayell had done enough for a grid slot of second for the Final. He dropped to fifth in the early stages but moved back up to fifth on lap ten of 13 and into third and a podium place on lap 12, to end the day on a positive note. Sunday’s Round 4 proved much harder. The youngster qualified third, but Heat One saw a continued lack of pace, losing ground on the hill and straights to finish a disappointing seventh.A few changes to the kart saw some improvement for heat two. Sayell took the early lead but was passed two laps later and again on lap six to finish third. Sayell started the final from fifth and looked on pace straight away, up to fourth on lap one and taking the fastest lap on lap three. He was up to third around lap nine and took a further (and the race’s) fastest lap on lap ten. Disaster struck a lap later as he tried to overtake the kart in second place. The two karts clipped wheels and Sayell was launched into the air over the kart in front, rolling twice to end upside down as the kart landed. Sayell limped away from the kart as the race finished and was checked over by medical staff. His dad Rob said: “Jenson was on target for his first win in the Pantano and had seen his chance to take the lead as the front two battled, it was an unfortunate racing incident.”We are beginning to understand the new kart and hope to come back stronger.”Sayell and the family team thank everyone for their concerns after his crash. They also thank Team TWR and engine builder Force Motorsport for support over the weekend as well as local sponsors JLK Vehicle Solutions, Ark East Anglia Ltd, Sun Lounge Tanning Studio, Chris Phillips – Superstox 99 and Hall Clean.Sayell returns to Glan-Y-Gors in two weeks for Round Three of the CKC Intermax Championship.
